Palm Beach Vipers Update

Over the last couple of days there has been alot of chatter in the pro paintball smackbox regarding the Palm Beach Vipers. We recently had the opportunity to catch up with team owner Ken Bryson for an official statement of the Palm Beach Vipers concerning the semi pro team, World Cup and future plans.

Palm Beach Vipers

Palm Beach will not be fielding a team in the semipro division at the 2009 World Cup. This was a difficult decision to make but after looking at our options we felt it was the most reasonable and responsible choice. After Chicago I released some players that were not working out for various reasons. Since then it became more apparent that several the players who remained after Chicago were unhappy and had little or no interest in continuing to play for the Palm Beach semipro squad if they were going to have to pay to support themselves in paintball. This past season dealing with the some of the personalities on the semipro team has been a task and the team has performed poorly. I am not willing to continue to financially support players who put little, if Palm Beach Vipersany, effort into the advancement and success of the team. All of the players on the semipro team were paying very little or nothing at all to play paintball for the last 2 seasons, or longer. In return for that financial support some of those same players (who are no longer with the organization) treated the events as nothing more than a vacation. Drunken beer parties, vandalizing hotel rooms, basically anything other than making effort to ensure that the team would have any chance of performing on the field. I’m all about enjoying yourself on trips with friends but there are times to be serious as well. I’m not paying for vacations, nor will I allow other people to sacrifice their money to do so. If those players, who in their defense are probably some of the best players we had and are exceptionally talented, can find someone else willing to provide that same “free ride” with no effort on their part and no expectations of hard work, maturity, commitment, loyalty and performance, I welcome and encourage them to go find it. And harbor no ill will or negative feelings for those that have left.

The players from the semipro squad who have continued to take the program seriously and are committed to the team and myself will remain and will be moved to help to strengthen the Div1 Venom roster for the World Cup event. We still have 5 other teams participating in the World Cup from D1 all the way down through D5 5man. The team continues to be strong in all of the other divisions and we appreciate all the support from our sponsors, supporters, friends and haters alike.

Hopefully, after this season is over and the PSP begins to reveal their plans for 2010 we can rebuild an upper divisional team. In that same thought we will also be refocusing the lower divisional teams in support of the regional and local events and having a smaller presence on the national series.

Ken and the PBV program are for sure an inspiration in Paintball. Congrats and good luck…

  2. haha says:

    LOL YOU MAD KEN!?

    • Ken says:

No, Im not mad at all. Theres no reason to be mad. Just a statement of fact. As I said, I hope all of the guys that felt the need to leave or were released continue to play and find new homes for themselves. I don’t think that any of my requests to the players on my teams have ever been unreasonable. Some disagreed, and now they are not here.

  3. Beezy says:

Finally! The SP squad has been lickin balls since day 1, i cant believe its taken this long for them to fold. Maybe he should have been stricter? Maybe he should have gone old school and given some beatings when needed? Who knows.

  4. Beezy says:

    What Ken does wrong:

    Never has players run drills

Always shoot marbles, not one practice where players can gauge how their otb shooting is

Would tell the semi-pro players an event is paid for, then would pull the rug out from under them the week of the event, causing most of the players to just be over the event, then once he dragged them through several long days of needless drama would pull out the ace he had in his pocket the whole time and get it paid for

Would always have practices where there would be usually 2-3 teams on each side so generally would have about 30 minutes in between points, each player would usually get 8 points in on a good day

Pits players against eachother to the point where most of them hated he each other, often when Brandon “google” Robinson got upset at practice and started yelling at ken over one of the team’s numerous problems Ken would find some way to put the problem off on some specific player on the team

As said about no drills, semipro would only run games never against any other semipro players, usually d2-d3 or d1 every full moon, inspite of the fact there are semipro teams within/near florida, or hell you could make like alot of good organizations and make two lines of semipro pbv and just run them against each other

Would get randomly raged at practices and call them for periods of time, or raged during points and just randomly call points while they were going on and when you have 30 minutes between points and play 8 points a day that can really add up

Says he is a coach but does/says nothing helpful at practices unless you call his pointless yelling

Has not actual knowledge of how to play the game

Doesn’t fully comprehend the rules (going to give you a hint of who this is here), but at PSP NEO you yelled at me for telling you towel when Vicious was running the clock on the point they had just won because they received a minor in the point, you yelled claiming “no matter who wins or loses a point the minor comes off”, guess what you were wrong and it didn’t come off.

In order to keep players around you threatened them saying you would get Lane to ban us from the PSP if we didn’t play with you

Could go on for awhile but I still have classes to goto

Apologies to the readers of this rant, I typed it in about 5 minutes time

    • beezy speeks the truth says:

Everything you have said is true. Only people on the inside know the real Ken.

    • DVDS says:

      Yikes….?

      Maybe your name?

      Response from Ken?

    • your a joke. says:

the majority of the things beezy is saying are 100% true. ive watched it for awhile now and poorly run practices makes for a poor tournament appearance and thats all they got from the SP team. You cant sit and play d3 kids at practice and expect a top 3 finish come the event.

The reason why PBV folded is because alot of people got very tired of what they saw happening inside the organization and when they approach ken about it he would just pawn it off on other people and be like WELLLLL this is why we cant do that or bla bla bla.

You were never a coach ken, maybe a friend to some, maybe just some team owner, but def never a coach. Coach’s train there players and run drills so he knows his team will win and im sorry to say ken you never did that.

    • Ken says:

My reply is at the top of the article. Bitterness and finger pointing is easy; especially when people pointing out all the horrible things about the team refuse to accept the fact that they were part of the problem and the reason for the failures. Not saying that I dont share an equal part of that responsibility of failure; I certainly do. I should have been more proactive and not allowed them to dig the hole as deep as it is. Not once did I ever have an ace up my sleeve to find a way to pay for an event when the players on the team failed to find a way to be able to afford to pay for it themselves, as they were told to do. Shame on me for doing thier job for them. Each time the event was paid at the very last minute it was because someone who supported the organization was generous enough to pony up when none of the players, who are now long gone, did their jobs; leaving the others holding the bag for you. In hindsight, many people that told me to cut the loss on the semipro team were probably correct. But I made a commitment to our sponsors and did the best we could with what I was dealt. But just to humor the readers I’ll address the points Matt has made…

Drilling, in my opinion, is something that can and needs to be done on weekends when the team is not scheduled to practice together. Having players spread out all over the state and part of the country does not lend itself well to running drills all day when that time can more effectivly be used for playing together as a team as much as possible.

Shooting marbles at practice is a necessary evil strictly based on finances. This has always been a double edged sword with the semipro players. They want to shoot Gold or Ultra Evil at practice but bitch and whine when theres not enough paint that can be bought with the $20 that each of the semipro players paid, if they bothered to pay it, towards the cost of the practice paint. Keep in mind that the balance of the players in this organization are paying $50 every time they step on the field to practice. But most of the semipro squad was too good to be bothered with all that. I will arrange for the team to shoot whatever they want, all they need to do is ask, but be prepared to pay for it. Had I been more of a prick I would have given the semipro squad exactly what the money they paid would have gotten them, a wristband, a bottle of water each and 2 cases of field paint. Not the hundreds of cases that were provided to them on the backs and wallets of the lower divisional players and myself. In addition to that I am willing to bet that this organization, as a whole, wastes more paint filling pods, and throwing away or stomping on partially filled bags in the pit than most teams actually shoot.

Telling the semipro players the event is paid for happened once, and in fact it was. Until some of the semipro players undermined that opportunity by acting like a bunch of immature douchebags and driving that potential sponsor away from the team. After that every player on that squad was instructed to find a way to get the money for entry to the next event, warned that the entry was due soon and then threatened that if it was not paid they would not play. Foolishly I went looking for a benefactor who took the chance, paid the fees, under the promise that it would be paid back and then each of the two times, MAO and Chicago, that happened that person got screwed by the players you now no longer see on the roster.

Practices for the semipro team were no different from any other squad in the organization. Yet another example of the selfishness exhibited on a regular basis by the greedy self centered children that were on this team. If you as semipro “athletes” wanted to practice harder and longer you would have all shown interest in being to the field and dressed to play on time, playing as many points as you could and not being the first ones undressed and jetting off to the beach or Subway. I dont remember anywhere in the job description for owning a team of players at this level of experience that I have to babysit and remind them that to get better you need to motivate yourselves to be so.

I don’t need to pit the players on the team against eachother, you were quite adept at doing that on your own with no assistance from me. Brandon was yelling at me that day out of sheer frustration after I had had enough of the bullshit from other players on the squad and threatened to send eveyone home. He had every right to be angry, this is a kid that literally, and without exaggeration, sacrificed everything to try and make the team work, drove 4 hours each way to practice and would do anything for the other people on this team. If any of the players that left had a fraction of the heart he has you would be lucky and unstoppable.

Last time I checked there are (was) 2 semipro teams in Florida, that practices here on a regular basis. RNT is here also and we played them as often as we could make arrangements to do so. But they also have players scattered all over the place and matching schedules was never easy. Damage pro is also here and would have been a great practice opponent but they have always had their own plans and adgenda and we did not fit into their training schedule, and playing the semipro squad would not benefit them. Your memory is bad, the semipro squad frequently played against eachother. Which going back to the paint situation caused problems so they could bitch that there wasnt enough paint for practices. Even the newest players on the team can recognize that if you play against yourselves you double your paint consumption, and your practice time, as horrible and useless as you say it is, gets cut in half.

Yes I rage, frequently, sometimes for long periods of time. Especially when I see potentially fantasticly good talented players doing the stupidest things. Including not sticking to plans or plays, being disrespectful, starting shit with other players, running their pieholes, and generally acting retarded. I call points when I feel the game being played has reached a reasonable conclusion. Again back to paint, 1v1 for 7 minutes consuming 500 or more balls is pointless to me. If you wanted to play more, you should have shown up on time and stayed later.

Yes I call myself a coach, a good coach sure, a great coach not a chance. I dont think there are many people here that can fathom the responsibilities that running an organization of this size requires on and off the field. I have learned what I know thru trial and error; I don’t have the luxury of a refrence manual to give me hints and tips. I’ve made 100 times the number of mistakes as most people in this game. Hopefully each time I do I learn from the experience. And with that learning I think I become a tiny but better at this. I feel that I know things about paintball that I can share with players to improve their game. I never said I was building the next Pro division championship team. I learn from other owners and coaches everytime I watch them. I learn more from other players and their individual skills, talents and styles of play regardless of the division they play. But players also need to take on some of their own responsibility and make efforts to find a way to teach themselves whatever they feel they are not getting from someone else.

My knowledge of how to play the game depends on which side of this fence you want to stand. You will find just as many people that will say they beleive that I know a lot about paintball as you would people who will say I know nothing. Opinions vary and everyone is entitled to theirs. Just like you.

Mistakes are made, I dont recall that specific incident. If I was wrong and my yelling hurt your feelings I apologize and I will make sure I am better prepared to deal with a similar situation if it comes up again.

This point is ridiculous, but I will answer it anyway. You must not know Lane very well at all. Yes Lane and I have been friends a long time, we talk often. He is a guy I have a ton of respect for, and I hope he feels the same for me. But even tho we are friends I can guarantee that he would not under any circumstances ban a player at my request simply because I was angry with someone. Secondly, what possible reason would I have to keep a player who would only stay here under the fear of being banned? What did in fact happen was that after the MAO disaster several players went asking Chris Raehl, Tim Schroepfer and Lane about getting reranked down from semipro so they would have the ability to play in lower divisions. I can only assume that the felt that they were not good enough to find spots on other semipro teams. I had nothing to do with the enstatement of the ruling that there is not ever going to be any reranking lower in the PSP. But I do support the decision.

The next comment is also a true statement. Only people on the inside know the real me. The one who allowed some of these same ungrateful, selfish, children to live in my home for free, fed them, allowed them to play paintball for next to nothing, put some of them thru school and provided for just about anything they asked for. And what did I expect in return? Effort, maturity, commitment, loyalty, integrity and maybe on occasion a simple thanks.

I guess thats too much to ask from some. Im happy with the players I have now. Hopefully we will be able to find a way to rebuild the semipro team with people that understand that the days of free ride paintball are long over, especially when you do nothing to earn it.

      • >.>...... says:

your best players are always gunna expect to pay less…if your not going to let that fly then thats why they leave, ultimately causing a non-progressing team.
you cant have some players pay different amounts then others.. if you think you can with paintball players egos then your wrong.

the statement about droping paintballs on the ground and steping on them is so idiotic. if you think every other team isnt droping a few paintballs here and there your strongly mistaken.

also the semi-pro team did not play each other frequently, actually i only remember them playing each other once while i spent my time in the pbv camp

all of you kids out there hate on people for moving on to better things, but who wants to continue going down the same path, when you can go on to do better things

kids stayed later to play but you would close the trailer to save paint. bad excuse also

i would say almost all of your intentions are positive but some things you say to players is just fucked up.

all im saying is you cant expect your players to stay around your “average” team when you treat them like shit and make them feel like shit. eventually theyll all go searching for greener grass

      • >.>...... says:

you also say its very hard for you to run so many teams…..you dont have to and you have had opportunity too keep 1-2 teams.. but you dont, your not only wasting your higher ranked players time. but also not dedicating your time to the highest level team which is suppose to be the team that matters

if your in it to help players make low division teams and stop getting kids hopes up

  5. lol says:

Funny how cry babys never give there names. Dont come on here and tell it like it is, unless you can man up your name. I dont even know PB or care about them.

    • Matthew Pelto says:

that is who I am, Ken should of been able to tell who it is from my one NEO comment. Ken knowing is all that mattered to me, but I mean if you must know. Though this may be a mistake because Ken Bryson is one of the few people who I believe to be crazy enough to seriously hurt someone because I voiced the dark truths about him on the internet.

  6. Re: lol says:

Kyle Spicka is a selfish douchebag. He talked more shit about Ken than anyone else and all Ken ever did for him was give him a house to live in, a free ride, and a team to play for. Give me a break Kyle- grow up. I hope you realize that you have never and will never be anything in paintball. You cause way more trouble than you are worth. You get on teams then go behind people’s backs to get your way b/c you aren’t good enough at paintball to get any real respect. The only contribution to paintball you have or will ever make is all the shit you talked on pbdojo about people who have made it possible for you to play paintball.

Good luck with SDA. You pull the same crap you have pulled with every other team you have ever been on Hinman’s going to knock your head off.

    • Ayo says:

Kyle paid when he could, plus all the drama he had to put up with, the ride was far from free. Kyle isn’t well off but he could have lived a much more comfortable life back at his house in the Carolinas if he wanted to.

  7. kyle spicka says:

not sure you have the whole story correct there. i hope this posting isnt in response to anything you think i have wrote on here considering ive droped and forgotten about the whole situation

i did everything i could in my power trying to make the palm beach vipers work. even from being the captain of the team from CUP to MAO. you may be right i didnt like some of the things ken was doing after and before chicago but i stood by and tried to make everything work long before this as much as i could.

the semi-pro team was falling and i think i made a good choice by leaving before the worst happened. Players that were still on the semipro team told me it was a good choice and opportunity.
you cant justify your argument when i left the team right before it fell… funny how you wont even show your name…
you guys can hate all you want but be sure to let me know who you are, id really like to know so i can give you guys an explantion to your rants

pbdojo posts were inside jokes to other friends

i do respect ken for everything he has done for me in the past.
i probably wouldnt be where im at right now if i hadnt took part in his organization for the time being.

but ken you did tell me and pelto ( prior to mao) you would have anyone who thought they were gunna play for another team ranked to pro so the couldnt play somewhere else

you guys can hate all you want but be sure to let me know who you are

    • Matthew Pelto says:

He actually made two threats of that sort Kyle, you have the MAO one correct but also don’t forget the weeks leading up to Chicago where he said he would get any of us straight up banned. Remember you said it was “blackmailing” and then Ken goes, “no it’s extortion.”

  8. Keep it real says:

I read thru the posts and I just wanted to say that I know Ken is a manipulative person. All of the yelling is just part of that. He is very well spoken and very smart but his motives are dirty. Now that he doesn’t have the paint distributor job where he was able to get free paint and sell us the returned paint that was returned by the stores, everything changes. Now he has no money to pay for the Semi-Pro because he is not making as much money from the paint anymore even though he makes a few bucks every weekend. I left the Vipers because we never accomplished anything as a team other than for a few local tournaments and I was tired of paying for garbage paint that he sold us.

    • Ken says:

You obviously have no idea what you are talking about. The only free paint that this team ever got was for national tournament events. And if you think I ever made $1.00 on this team you are dreaming. If there was ever any thing more than what it cost to buy paint from whoever happened to have the best deal at the time the lack of money from the semipro players took care fo that several times over. If you dont know, don’t speculate. And once again people posting hiding behind the anonymity of the internet. if you are such an expert why would you not post your name to validate your ridiculous claims?

  9. B.French says:

    Too much drama.
    I’m a Palm Beach Viper.
    Things happen, things don’t happen.
I’m just here to be a Paintball Player and thats all there is to it.

I don’t like dealing with this “Cheerleader” type drama.
He said, she said, they said. It doesn’t matter.
It’s all over and done with.

Ken’s statement is there, other people can comment, but thats it.
    They’re only comments.

Everyone needs to grow up now.

World Cup is coming up soon. What the organization does or doesn’t do, shouldn’t concern anyone except those in it.

I’m just glad I never come onto this website to read
even half of the jargon that is said here.

    Thanks.

  10. Trent Massa says:

After reading what i have just read. It literally makes me want to throw my computer at the wall. Almost everything Ken said in that 10 minute rant was a lie or very far from the truth.

1.Ken always said we would Drill, but something would come up or he would say ” But i have a team here for you guys to play”. Who would be D3 level at best and we would just run through them.

2.Ken gave the Semi Pro Players a price that everyone agreed on and that was $20. So we all payed the $20 every practice, besides Bobby French of course.

3.Ken tells us the Monday before Chicago we are not playing because the person who was going to pay for it backed out. After all of us had already bought plane tickets and had gone to all the practices prior to the event. He said he was not going to pay for it so we had to find our own way to pay for it. Causing nothing but drama and stress to all 8 players on the team 2 days before we leave for Chicago.

    4. Myself, Josh and Spicka were ALWAYS the first players on the field and the last ones off. When everyone decided to pack up and leave. We would always be out drilling after practice even though west palm is 4 hours from my home in Tampa. So please do not say

“If you as semipro “athletes” wanted to practice harder and longer you would have all shown interest in being to the field and dressed to play on time, playing as many points as you could and not being the first ones undressed and jetting off to the beach or Subway”

There was multiple times where i was at the field in West Palm long after you were gone. Drilling and practicing trying to make my self the best I could be.

5.You did pit us against ourselves. After Cup we didn’t need any new players because Hey we just got 2nd place at World Cup in the highest level besides pro. But look you decided to make basically a new team right before Phoenix and expect the older players not to be frustrated and obviously not like the idea of them being on the team. Cough Cough Google Brittany

    6. We played RNT twice and Damage maybe once and CEP once. Out of the 3 years I was on this team.

    7. Drunken Beer parties didn’t happen after Chicago 08 where you caught us. If you were not blind you would see that every player in the organization isn’t who you think they are. The semi pro players never had any part in the parties after Chicago 08 that was always the younger teams. We would usually bring girls back to the hotel, but that was about it.

    8. You RAGE every practice. You love yelling for absolutely no reason. And making us all angry and not wanting to play anymore. Take this for example. At Chicago 09 before our match against RNT ken took us all into a empty pit and Yelled at us for 40 minutes about everything we do wrong. And when he was done someone asked if we should get paint now and Ken simply said ” Why should I waste my money? You faggots are just going to lose”. And you wonder why we performed so well.

    9. You are a Terrible coach. Don’t call yourself a good one. This is all about making friends for you. Not WINNING it never was. Look at World Cup 08, you had nothing to do with anything Thomas ran the whole show and look what happened we did the best we ever did. Because he wasn’t yelling at us he was actually helping us and motivating us.

    10. Effort, maturity, commitment, loyalty, integrity and maybe on occasion a simple thanks.

We are all Leaps and bounds more mature then you. I can go into details on this one but I’m sure pro paintball won’t take kindly to it.

Commitment everyone of us was at every practice ready to play. Even when its a 4 hour drive for half the squad. Pelto was at what 5 practices before Chicago and he lives in Texas..

Loyalty when has anyone not been Loyal to you, until you made us all want to find new homes.

“Integrity as a concept has to do with perceived consistency of actions, values, methods, measures, principles, expectations and outcomes”

I don’t know how you could say we didn’t do everything mentioned in that quote.

Thanks ,I Thanked you every single time you did something nice for me. I.e. Take me out to dinner, let me stay at your house, getting us new gear, Paying for paintball, Fixing my broken gun.

    11. You know you threatened Pelto and Kyle when they tried to get re ranked with the “Ima get you banned or ranked to PRO. Because by then you knew you had run the program into the ground and wanted all of us to sink with you.

    12. Adam Hitchcock- Ken picks up a player at the Chicago Event as they were driving from West Palm Beach. To play with our Semi PRO team. Ken has never seen him play but he picks him up regardless without asking the players if we agree or not. When asked why he did this he stated ” I needed the god damn money” and that ” Adam is a better player then you Kyle” When that is the farthest from the truth. As you can see it was never about Winning for Him.

    13. Ken would always get FURIATED at us when he saw us enjoying ourselves at paintball events. Because he believes we the semi pro players need to be filling pods for our younger teams, which we didn’t agree with. Most of the time we were on the spectator side coaching them making sure people didn’t counter coach and coaching the younger players in the organization. Since PBV has 19 teams we are at the field from 7 to 7 almost every day and he wonders why we don’t want to fill pods. Coaching and being there for 12 hours even when we don’t have games wasn’t enough for ken. He wanted to make us hate everything about paintball.

Finally, I wish Ken and PBV the best of luck in the Future.

    • Randy says:

For Ken paintball is his way to lure young kids. In the semi-pro we were just the bait. That’s why he never cared about us. Ken is looked upon as a king of paintball when all he really is an opportunist. He thrives on fame and articles like this just boost his ramp.

    • drinking says:

at events was only after the team was out of the tournament. which EVERY single paintball team does. they wernt idiots they wanted to win tournaments as bad as you, never would they go have crazy nights before matches

  11. K. Spicka says:

Kyle is a drama queen. He’s no more than a good D2 player than slithered his way onto good teams b/c of people he knows. He is a snake- always up to something to better himself at the expense of his team or someone else.
Who cares if he had to pay or not- I’ve never even met this Ken character so I can’t talk about how Kyle treated his team, I can only say what kind of person he is.

    • Actually says:

i dont think you knew kyle very well, or what he had to go through playing, living, and revolving his ENTIRE life around the vipers. he was dedicated to that team up unto the end…..and left at the end.

  12. Wow says:

This is kind of ridiculous the accusations flying around. The ex-Vipers players seem to be in a consensus about what happened at the Vipers camp with Ken just completely denying any and all allegations regarding himself. I’m more inclined to believe the players purely because of the fact that so many of them are on the same page and have the same arguments/examples to back up their claims.

  13. I miss Lil Ian says:

Noone deserved what Ken put us through.

  14. What is this says:

a gay reunion, i think im lost

  15. hahahahah says:

This has to be one of the best reads Ive seen on here in a while. Kept the hate going!

  16. lil ian ate all my jerky in LA says:

    its tru

  17. TT says:

Why do you think Lil Ian moved? Hummm Ken literally screwed him.

  18. RR says:

    josh also

  19. sean says:

i played on the viper organization longer then anyone on the team and all i have to say is wtf just happened

  20. Bill says:

I was wondering when the implosion was going to occur. I think Ken needs to stop running paintball teams but I don’t think he will.

  21. DAMN says:

    ALL HAIL BUTTPLUG

  26. LOL says:

I would quit Vipers. I see the use of the term “organization” as if this team was some sort of corporation when they are really just a paintball team with what seems a manipulative team owner. I bet this guy Ken came up with the term “organization”. The use of this term for a paintball team is boastful and indicator of someone that even considers the use of words to try to impress a 12 year old. I smell a rat and I would recommend to those of you on the “paintball team” to really take a closer look at your leader.

Haha, wow. What does it matter to you guys. Seriously, grow up. You don’t need to prove yourselves to anyone. You all(the players released from the program)have made a destructive impression on everyone and have no one to blame but yourselves. Thank you for not caring about the rest of the people in the program who seem to have no problem with Ken what so ever. We now have to construct around the catastrophe you guys have set. You are dead end athletes with no future outside of the game. I wish the best of luck to you guys in Orlando.
